Our story begins in 1899 with British engineer, James Marshall. When his wife was taken ill in Canada, James hand-made her a supportive mattress with coiled springs wrapped in muslin. It was a revelation in comfort.
But it wasn’t until 1901 that the revolutionary design came to Britain. Brought over by John Nolon and Frederick James, the pair decided to produce the mattress commercially and incorporated the Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company in 1901.

Wool
Britain’s variable climate produces wool that is soft, springy, and strong. Vispring is the only bed maker using 100% Platinum Certified British fleece wool, sourced from the Shetland Isles and Devon. Hypoallergenic, breathable, and ten times more absorbent than synthetics, British wool is perfect for mattresses. Produced with traditional methods, it regulates temperature and provides lasting comfort.
Bamboo
With its name meaning “reincarnation” in a Chinese dialect, bamboo has inspired myths and legends throughout Asia. Originally indigenous to northern China, it is omnipresent in the architecture, industry, cookery and landscapes of the entire continent. Vispring sources its bamboo fibre in China. An eminently sustainable resource, it is also soft and exceptionally absorbent – wicking away moisture to ensure that you wake fully refreshed.
Cotton
Cotton has been farmed since prehistoric times. Hundreds of years before the Christian era, cotton textiles were being produced with exceptional skill in India, from where they spread to Western Europe. The Turkish long-fibre cotton used by Vispring is incredibly soft and durable, with an unparalleled sheen. Highly absorbent and naturally breathable, it is uniquely hygienic – wicking away moisture to preserve your comfort throughout the night.
Vicuna
A precious gift from the high Andean plateaux, vicuña wool is one of the most sought after and luxurious textiles in the world. It symbolises the splendours of Inca civilisation, when it was against the law for anyone but royalty to wear vicuña garments. Vicuña is absorbent, has excellent insulating properties and – being free of lanolin – is also hypoallergenic. Vispring selects these long, lustrous fibres for their warmth, their beauty and their delicious softness.
Mohair
Our mohair comes from the Karoo National Park in South Africa, a spectacular expanse of semi-desert and grassland that produces the finest mohair in the world. One of the oldest textile fibres in use today, this luxurious material is made from the hair of the Angora goat. Durable, resilient and exquisitely soft, it is also an excellent natural insulator; warm in winter, its moisture wicking properties keep it deliciously cool in summer to guarantee year-round comfort.
