How do I Choose my Bed Size?

You may already know through experience, that the firmness or softness of your mattress can hugely affect your quality of sleep, but did you realise that your mattress size can be just as important? Sleeping on a mattress that is too small for your body type will mean you aren’t getting enough space or support throughout the night and this can lead to disrupted sleep, and endless tossing and turning.

Your ideal mattress and bed size depends on factors such as your height, weight, lifestyle, sleeping environment and sleeping partner(s), so you need to weigh up all your options very carefully when making this decision.

Whether you are single, a couple, have children or pets who share, our many in-store Vispring experts will be able to assist you in this process, but read on for our top tips to finding your perfect mattress.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT MATTRESS SIZES?

One of the first decisions to make when buying a mattress is the size. Mattress sizes and their names differ around the globe, so it is very important to double-check the exact dimensions with one of our trusted retail partners. The main aspects that you should consider when deciding on your mattress size are your height, weight, whether you’ll be sharing with a partner, whether you will have your children on pets sharing, how restless you are as a sleeper, and the size of your bedroom.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH MATTRESS IS RIGHT FOR ME?

Here we’ve listed everything you need to consider, to help you get an idea of the different options you have and ensure you pick the mattress/bed of your dreams.

WHAT IS YOUR BODY TYPE?

One of the first things that you need to consider is your body type, including your height and weight. Your mattress needs to be wide and long enough to accommodate you comfortably, or you won’t be able to stretch out and truly relax during the night. For example, single mattresses are usually ideal for most single sleepers or children, but they would not be suitable for very tall or heavy people, who will require extra room. Those over six feet tall would benefit from a king mattress, which allows sleepers an extra ten centimetres to stretch out. King mattresses are also perfect for you if you find your feet often hang over the edge of the bed.

Considering your weight will also help you to choose your tension (for more information please refer to our guide to finding your perfect mattress), ensuring that support is optimum for you.

DO YOU SLEEP WITH A PARTNER?

Sharing a bed with a partner can be cosy and intimate, but it can also create a number of problems – especially if your mattress isn’t large enough to comfortably accommodate both of you. If you often find yourself fidgeting in bed and trying to get an extra inch or two of space, or you wish you could stretch out a bit more, then it could be a sign that you need to upgrade to a larger mattress. If you have room in your bedroom, we would always recommend that you opt for a king or super-king size bed: this will ensure everyone has space they fully need to relax.

For most co-sleepers, the movements of their partner, children or pets during the night can be very disruptive, particularly if you they are active sleepers. As all Vispring mattresses use individually pocketed springs in a honeycomb formation, they are perfect for co-sleeping as the smart spring technology doesn’t allow movement to travel across the mattress.

If you don’t sleep with a partner, then a very wide mattress may not be necessary, unless you’re very tall and need the extra length of a king-size: a double or small double is probably a better idea.

ARE YOU AN ACTIVE SLEEPER?

Do you often wake up in the morning to find that you’ve rolled across to the other side of your bed, or even completely shifted your pillows and duvet? If so, then it’s likely that you’re an active sleeper, meaning you’re prone to moving around a lot during your sleep. It isn’t a huge deal but it does mean that when deciding on your mattress size, you’ll need to make sure it’s spacious enough to contain your movements.
